Ilhan Omar Is changing The Current Narrative About Women Of colour Who Run For Office

Ilhan Omar from Minnesota, “the first Somali-American Muslim person to become a legislator,” is one of the symbolisms America needs to blur the lines of artificial differences, hatred and intolerance tearing the people apart.

Ilhan Omar who was the youngest of seven children had her her family fled from the Somali civil war and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. Ilhan who came to the United States in 1995 at the age of 8 alongside her grandfather.

In November 2016, Ilhan Omar made history as the first Somali-American to be elected a legislator in the United States after securing 80 percent of the vote.In the primary contest earlier, she defeated a 22-term incumbent to clinch the party ticket.

“This really was a victory for that 8-year-old in that refugee camp, this was a victory for the young woman being forced into child marriage. This was a victory for every person that’s been told they have limits on their dreams.” Ilhan Omar, said.

Just of recent TIME magazine named her among the ‘FIRSTS: WOMEN WHO ARE CHANGING THE WORLD’ celebrating women who have chalked ‘Firsts’ in their respective fields.

I constantly question myself, I question those around me, I question policy and reasoning behind everything.

“My family called me the “why kid” growing up. I always needed to know why something is happening, why I had to do something, why whatever. I still am that way. I constantly question myself, I question those around me, I question policy and reasoning behind everything,” she told the magazine in an interview that recalled her days in Somalia till date” she said in an interview with TIMES.

She was listed among other female achievers like Melinda Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Serena Williams, the U.S. envoy to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, and former first lady and secretary of state of the U.S. Hillary Clinton.

Ilhan Omar is also policy analyst, coalition builder,community educator and a mother of three.

As a lawmaker in the Minnesota House of Representative for District 60B, her legislative area comprises parts of the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, south-east Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota.
